A polo pony does the running, but the rider isn't a passenger — hitting a moving ball accurately from a moving saddle, absorbing ride-offs, and repeating explosive effort chukka after chukka all demand real athletic conditioning. Here's what serious players actually train.

Cardiovascular demands

A chukka is a series of short, explosive efforts rather than one steady effort — sprints of positioning and pursuit separated by brief recoveries — which rewards the same kind of interval-style cardiovascular fitness used in many stop-start field sports, more than pure long-distance endurance. Players commonly supplement mounted practice with running, cycling or rowing intervals to build that capacity off the horse.

Core and rotational strength

The polo swing is a rotational, core-driven movement executed while balancing in a moving saddle — closer in its demands to golf or tennis than to simply sitting a horse. Core strength and hip mobility both directly translate into a cleaner, more powerful, more repeatable swing, and reduce the risk of the back strain that comes from compensating with the arms alone.

Riding-specific conditioning

Leg strength and balance built through regular riding itself remain the foundation — there's no substitute for saddle time, echoed throughout our learning to play guide. Off-horse, many players add balance and stability work, along with hip and inner-thigh conditioning, to hold a secure seat through ride-offs and sharp turns without over-relying on the reins.

Grip and forearm endurance

A full match's worth of mallet swings and rein control adds up to significant forearm and grip fatigue, particularly for newer players who haven't yet learned to swing efficiently rather than simply with force. Forearm and grip conditioning, alongside proper technique, both help delay that fatigue across a long tournament day.

Injury prevention

Polo is a genuine contact sport at speed, and falls, collisions and mallet-related knocks are a real risk factor — which is exactly why helmets, knee guards and boots are treated as non-negotiable rather than optional. Beyond protective kit, general conditioning — balance, reactive strength, and simply not being fatigued late in a match — reduces injury risk in ways that mirror injury-prevention advice across other fast contact sports.

Mental conditioning

Decisions in polo happen at speed and under genuine physical risk, which rewards the same kind of composure-under-pressure training seen in other fast-reaction sports: staying calm, reading developing plays early, and not freezing when a ride-off is closing in. Experienced players often describe this as the single hardest thing to teach a promising newcomer.

Fitness across a lifetime

Because handicaps, not age or raw athleticism, largely determine who plays with whom, polo remains genuinely playable well into later life, and many lifelong players simply adjust training intensity and playing frequency as they age rather than stopping.
